From the NICU

Dear friends, just wanted to give a quick update of how Aubrey has been doing in the NICU. So many of you have told us you've been praying and wanted to know how she is -- you have NO idea how much this means to me! Knowing there are so many who love and care for our little girl has lifted my spirit during these first days of being home without her.

I came home from the hospital yesterday, and was able to get a ride from my momma to go back and see her today. Amazingly, she continues to do really well!! She still is breathing completely on her own, and they have already been able to increase her feeds from 2 mL at day 2 to 7 mL today (potentially 8 by tonight)! This really is amazing and a miracle that she has had so few difficulties so far. The fact that she has done so well with her feeds means that they have been able to hold off putting a PICC-line in. That is the IV-line that gets inserted into her arm and travels all the way up her arm into the artery closest to her heart -- a yucky procedure that is often hard to do on such tiny babies. It would be necessary if she needs continued extra nutrition apart from my milk. So far she has this through her IV in her umbilical cord, but that can only be a temporary thing. They planned on doing the picc line yesterday, but have been waiting to see how quickly they can increase the amount of milk she gets in her feeding tube. I am praying that she won't have to have the picc line at all, and will be able to get her other IV line taken out soon. The less tubes the better. =)

She has lost a tiny bit more weight, 2 lbs 12 oz today. And her jaundice levels rose slightly from yesterday, so they are keeping her under the bilirubin lights most of the day and night. But these are really small setbacks compared to what could be happening. We are so grateful for our feisty girl! It is very surreal to be home, no longer pregnant, but without our little one. I loved being able to put my other girls to bed last night. Katie said, "Mom, you can finally sing us our bed time songs again!" There has been quite a contrast of emotions as I am so happy to be home with Will and the girls, but so desperately want to be closer to Aubrey and able to see her more. It's a little bit of a roller coaster ride, but one that has been covered in grace upon grace.

Thank you for praying and being there. We couldn't do this without you.

Aww, that must be so hard to be torn between two worlds. Praying that the day will come quickly when you can all be home together.

Love you.
